Research programs

One research agenda, five named programs.

Each program below carries its real status. We won’t call something proven until it has been.

01In the field

Plant Health

Built, validated, and in use.

Point a basic smartphone at a leaf and get back what's wrong with it — by name — and what to do about it today. The software side is the CropCare AI app and the outbreak maps it feeds; the hardware side, further out, is field cameras and spray drones for the same diagnosis-and-response loop at a larger scale. The outbreak-alert layer doesn't wait for your own scan — it watches disease reports across a region and warns people nearby before it reaches them. This is the lab's first program, and the one furthest along: built and validated, now moving toward wider availability.

02In research

Water & Soil

Scoped and sequenced. Research and prototyping ahead.

Where Plant Health reads a leaf, Water & Soil reads the ground and the water applied to it: irrigation guidance and weather-aware scheduling on the software side, low-cost soil probes and smart irrigation controllers on the hardware side. Built for the same conditions as everything else here — patchy connectivity, mixed cropping, low-cost sensing rather than enterprise-grade instrumentation.

  • Status: scoping and early prototyping

Smart Mechanization

Scoped and sequenced. Research and prototyping ahead.

A farm dashboard and drone mission planning on the software side; drones and autonomous or retrofit machinery on the hardware side. The bet is that mechanization doesn't have to mean large, expensive, imported equipment built for a different kind of farm — it can be built for the one most of the world actually has.

Yield & Markets

Scoped and sequenced. Research and prototyping ahead.

Plant Health tells a farmer what's wrong now. Yield & Markets is about what's ahead: yield and quality reports from field-level data and grading cameras, built to help input, labor, and timing decisions get made with foresight instead of guesswork.

  • Status: scoping and early prototyping

05Exploring

Controlled Growing

Early-stage. We're still testing whether this is the right problem to commit to.

The earliest-stage program here: climate and nutrient control software, hydroponic towers and greenhouse sensors as hardware. Controlled growing is a different problem shape from an open field — faster cycles, tighter margins for error — and we're still establishing whether it belongs in this research agenda the same way the others do.

  • Status: early exploration
  • Figures pending
06Open

Open by design

Not fixed by design. The next program earns this slot when the evidence points to it.

We're not filling this slot with a roadmap placeholder for its own sake. Agriculture's interlocking problems are one research agenda, not a portfolio of separate apps — so the next program isn't decided ahead of time. When farmers, partners, or our own research surface a problem worth solving, it earns a name and a number here. Have one in mind? Bring it to the lab.
